Festival of Quilt winning designs Knitting and Stitching Show 2018

The Knitting and Stitching Show Dublin is the biggest and longest running textile event in Ireland. Encompassing all manner of textile disciplines from crochet and embroidery to patchwork, felt-making, shibori dyeing and quilting, this show has something for anyone with an interest in textile craft.

Be inspired by work from leading textile artists shown across 13 professionally curated textile galleries, including the Royal School of Needlework, Jo Beattie, Studio 21, the Festival of Quilts and the Irish Patchwork Society.

Learn new skills at one of the hundreds of workshops and demonstrations on offer. With everything from knitting and crochet drop-ins to sessions promising to teach you the art of tailoring, there is no better place to get hands-on and crafty.

Stock up your yarn stash, re-fill your haberdashery collection and refresh your patchwork supplies at over 150 craft stands.

We have arranged door to door transport on both days so all you have to do is relax and enjoy the show.

Festival of Quilt displays Knitting and Stitching Show 2018

This gem of a museum is home to what is widely considered to be the finest collection of manuscripts and books to be made by any private collector in the 20th century. Divided into three areas, Western, East Asian and Islamic, it contains representative samples of the world’s artistic, religious and secular heritage from about 2700 BC to the present day.  Highlights include some of the earliest sources on papyrus for the bible, more than 260 complete and fragmentary Qur’ans, some dating from the late eighth and ninth centuries and the largest collection of jade books from the Imperial Court outside China.

The Chester Beatty Library is free and open until 5pm.

Maureen Lee Fabric Affair

Life-long sewer, fabric-lover and quilter, Margaret Lee is the founder of event retailer Fabric Affair, which specialises in selling artisan woven Donegal Tweed to crafters. Working closely with family-run weavers McNutt of Donegal, she commissions exclusive collections in traditional Donegal Tweed textiles and also creates tweed textile designs for publications such as British Patchwork and Quilting and Today’s Quilter.

We have arranged for Margaret to come the hotel on the first evening of the tour to talk us about the unusual craft of wool quilting and show us some of her remarkable collection of fabric and quilts.

Margaret will also give everyone a 10% Fabric Affair voucher to use at the Knitting & Stitching Show.

This is Knit Powerscourt

Logo This is Knit

This is Knit is a mother-and-two-daughter yarn store based in the beautiful surroundings of the Powerscourt Townhouse in the centre of Dublin.

"We are delighted to bring our local customers a select range of top quality brands from around the world and to tempt them with home-grown offerings from local hand dyers, spinners and mills," enthuse Jenny, Jacqui and Lisa. "We also thoroughly enjoy helping visitors to Ireland find that perfect souvenir from their trip from among our broad selection of yarns and accessories."

The shop also runs a lively programme of events and we have arranged for you to visit the store for a private Yarn Tasting where you will be able to try out three different Irish yarns, learn about how each is sourced, their various characteristics and what type of projects they are most suitable for. The tasting will last about one hour and there will be plenty of tea, coffee and biscuits too.

Mount Usher Gardens Ireland November 2018

One of the great gardens of Ireland – and a particular favourite of BBC Gardener’s World presenter Monty Don – Mount Usher on the banks of the River Vartry was created in the mid-1880s by Edward Usher. Inspired by the natural cottage garden ideas of ‘wild’ gardener William Robinson, Mount Usher is delightfully informal and natural, boasting an abundance of wildlife, including otters and kingfishers, as well as more than 5,000 varieties of trees and plants.

When we visit in November, the garden will be bursting with autumn colour and you will be treated to a private guided tour with the Head Gardener who will talk to you about the magnificent tree collection and the history of the garden.

After the tour you will be able to relax in the cosy Avoca Garden Cafe and indulge in a spot of retail therapy at specialist shops including the Avoca Bakery Food Market, AB Soap Studio and Oska.
