A Deeper Dive

We love the Valsana Hotel, proof that luxury and sustainability can go hand in hand. Inspired by nature and its beautiful setting, the Valsana has outstanding (and award winning) eco credentials.
Part of the Green Globe* certified Tschuggen Collection, Valsana has been 100% climate neutral since 2019. Much of this has been achieved by updating infrastructure and through the smarter use of resources, with any remaining emissions off-set to support dedicated projects including rewilding alpine wetlands and supporting the Virunga mountain gorilla project in Rwanda.
Valsana was built as a hotel for the future with sustainability at its core. Constructed in 2017, its electricity comes courtesy of the local hydro-power plant and the heating system is one of the most environmentally friendly in Europe - the hotel uses geothermal probes and captures waste heat from other appliances and activities that's then stored in the ice battery until it's needed.
Priority was given to sustainable materials too. For example, much of the wood – including the panels in the lounge and the bedroom chairs, was upcycled from the old building and the landscaping that surrounds the hotel is a bio-diverse lawn featuring a house for wild bees.
Inside, the sustainability of every detail has been considered. In the bedrooms, guests sleep on 100% natural Elky Natur mattress and the Nespresso Coffee Pods are sustainable and recycled after use. In the bathrooms, organic Swiss brands Nooii and FAIRCosmEthics products come in re-fillable containers and reminders to re-use towels are printed on glasses rather than paper. In the public areas, the lights in the corridors and vestibules react to motion sensors, the bars are plastic straw-free, all the food is locally sourced and seasonal where possible, the wines are European, while the water is sourced in Arosa.

*The Green Globe is awarded to companies in the tourism and events industries whose corporate approach targets the respectful and economical use of resources.

Reliable, comfortable, and often boasting breathtakingly beautiful views, Switzerland’s trains are hard to beat.
The first things that sets the Swiss system apart is its size - even the smallest towns have a frequent and reliable service so you really can travel around the country by train.
The second is that the timetable is integrated to make connections quick and easy - the average wait for a connecting train is no more than 10 minutes – and it is aligned with other forms of public transport too, so if you arrive at your destination and need to take a bus, there will be one.
And third, they are punctual. Official statistics for 2022 put punctuality at 92.5%, with punctuality defined as within three minutes of the scheduled arrival time. Add clean, modern, accessible carriages and, on the routes through the mountains, oversized windows that make the most of the spectacular scenery, and this really is the very best way to travel. Which is why we have opted for a train transfer from Zurich to Arosa. The final leg from Chur to Arosa itself is a single gauge that winds up the mountain, setting the scene for this Alpine holiday.

The range of menus on offer at the restaurants included in the Dine Around option matche the scenery and panoramas of Arosa, both filling and good for your soul.
As well as four local restaurants, you can also eat at both of the Tschuggen Collection's Arosa hotels – The Valsana and the Grand Hotel, both of which pride themselves on sustainability and a beneficial relationship with the natural surroundings of the Schanfigg Valley. For example, at Restaurant Twist, the menu's mantra is that their meals are intended to “promote good health, reduce inflammation and boost immunity”, of course, at the same time as being tantalising on the tastebuds!

And at The Grand Restaurant the menu boasts its plant-based dishes with an emphasis on nutrient based ingredients, which celebrate sophistication without being ostentatious.
Bon appetite!

Nestled in the stunning, picturesque Schanfigg Valley, Arosa is the very picture of an Alpine village, from its diverse array of ski runs and hiking trials, to the charming wooden houses that are so quintessentially Swiss, it is considered one of Switzerland’s most traditional resorts.
From the humble beginnings of a small Medieval farming village, Arosa first came to light in recent years after Sherlock Holmes’ creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who was wintering in nearby Davos, skied down into Arosa’s valley, ending his journey with a luncheon at a local inn, the Seehof (Arosa’s first hotel). He wrote about his adventure in British magazine, The Strand in 1894, and Arosa became a firm favourite with British ski enthusiasts thereafter.

The hotel also offers one and two-bedroom apartments, all of which feature a fully-equipped kitchen.
