Keukenhof’s annual spring festival is one of the world’s most spectacular floral events. Seven million flowering bulbs turn the garden into a heady celebration of tulips, anemones, daffodils, freesias and hyacinths - themed, for 2019, around the idea of 'Flower Power'. There is also a spectacular sculpture garden where visitors will find extraordinary displays created by the world’s leading floriculturists, as well as exhibition zones such as the Beatrix Pavilion with its stunning collection of orchids and the Orange Nassau Pavilion where florists give daily demonstrations.
With its ancient buildings, cobbled streets and winding waterways, Haarlem is certainly one of the Netherland’s most beautiful cities. Keen shoppers will find plenty of Dutch specialities to take home at Grote Markt, the country’s best street market, while those after an archetypal Dutch experience should head straight for the 18th century smock windmill Molen de Adriaan.
The tour price includes entry to the Frans Hals Museum. Hals, the principal portraitist of the Dutch Golden Age, lived and worked in Haarlem and the eponymous museum holds the largest collection of his work in the world. Set in the heart of the region’s bulb growing area, Haalem is also a city of flowers and each spring the Museum invites florists, including Paul Wijkmeijer, to create floral arrangements which are displayed in both historic vases from the collection and contemporary ones designed by students at the Rietveld Academy. Cleverly placed among the paintings, this unique flower exhibition is not to be missed.
Delft is synonymous with the blue and white pottery that bears its name and no trip to the city would be complete without a visit to the Royal Delft Experience. Meet a Master Painter, go on a fascinating journey through Royal Delftware’s 400 year history and discover the brand’s links with the Dutch Royal Family and Delft’s most famous artist, Johannes Vermeer.
You will also have time to visit some of Delft’s other cultural highlights. See the studio where Vermeer painted ‘The Girl with a Pearl Earring’ and ‘View of Delft’ at the Vermeer Centre for example, or explore the city’s fascinating history at the Museum Prinsenhof, then visit Oude Kerk and Nieuwe Kerk to see the graves of both Vermeer and William of Orange.
The pretty, medieval streets surrounding the Markt Square have plenty to tempt shoppers. Oude Delft, Choorstraat, Voldersgracht, Wijnhaven, Hippolytusbuurt and Vrouw Juttenland are filled with art galleries, one-off fashion stores, gift shops, vintage boutiques and speciality stores selling local cheese and wine. And if you need some refreshment, there are plenty of cafés too; try a traditional Dutch herring or mackerel sandwich at Visbanken, which has been involved in the fish trade since the Middle Ages, for example, or follow Bill and Hillary Clinton’s lead and treat yourself to a plate of ‘poffertjes’ (Dutch pancakes) at Het Gulden ABC.
The Netherlands’ capital is known for its artistic heritage, narrow Golden Age houses with their gabled facades and its canals. Our tour culminates with an atmospheric cruise along these famous waterways, taking in all the must-see sights. You will then have time to pick up some last minute souvenirs in the 17th century city centre.
The 4* Hague Marriott is a stylish and comfortable hotel with spacious bedrooms, conveniently located close to the centre of The Hague. The Gallery Breakfast Room serves an extensive breakfast buffet, including delicious Dutch waffles, while the Lounge Bar offers an all-day international menu. There are also plenty of restaurants within easy walking distance of the hotel.
