With a tradition dating back at least 6,000 years, India's handmade textiles are woven through its history, culture, and economy. The varied geography and climate of this vast country mean that most regions have developed their own distinctive dyes, weaves, prints and embroideries from the golden silks of Assam to the red dyes of the south-east.

Maldharis* were granted the tropical grassland of Banni by the local ruler under the condition that they protect it, share it communally, and not use the land for agriculture. For more than 500 years they have done this, moving with their herds over the grasslands for most of the year - and during the monsoon season residing in modest round mud dwellings called Bungas. Every Maldhari keeps between 10-90 buffaloes as well as goats. Today some 10,000 Maldharis live in Banni, tending to over 168,000 buffalos that produce somewhere around 1,10,000 litres of milk a day. The sale of livestock, as well as the sale of milk and milk products, contributes annually to the local economy in the region of 20 million USD. The men tend cattle and sheep as well as collecting honey and gum arabic found amongst the grassland. The women cook, sew, embroider and quilt. Sewing is an important skill for young girls to learn as they are expected to sew elaborate garments for their wedding day.

Jewelry and clothing are very important to Maldharis' sense of identity, and celebration of their heritage. Symbolic of ancient traditions, beliefs, and ideals. The men wear gold hoops and buttons in their ears and on the hands used for milking wear many silver rings. As they milk, it flows over the rings as an offering to the god, replacing obligations to make visits to a temple for offerings. Maldhari women's ears are folded and stretched with a large amount of hanging silver and on their wrists heavy bangles made of silver and bone. The ornamentation is worn as a status symbol of wealth upon which their family honor depends.

* (The literal meaning of Maldhari is keeper (dhari) of the animal stock)
