A Deeper Dive
Raleigh, state capital of North Carolina, is known for its greenery (there are 10,000 acres of parkland in and around the city ), its vibrant arts community and its plethora of cultural institutions. Here are some suggestions for your free time in the city:
Places to eat & drink
Named as one of America’s hottest food cities (Zagat) and one of 12 global destinations to travel to (Forbes), Raleigh is delicious! From food trucks to sushi spots, craft breweries and chocolate shops, there is something for every appetite. Here are some downtown suggestions for those looking for a taste of Southern cuisine :
Humble Pie
A Raleigh tradition since 1989. Share tapas style dishes such as cornmeal fried oysters, cauliflower mac-n-cheese, and pimento cheese tater tots (deep fried grated potato).
The Fiction Kitchen
This farm-to-fork restaurant specialises in delicious vegan and vegetarian takes on local cuisine such as crispy fried, mock chicken and waffles and an Eastern Carolina-style barbecue pulled ‘pork’.
Poole’side Pies
Award-winning chef Ashley Christensen eatery is dedicated to Neapolitan-style pies. In addition to the pies, you’ll also find delicious treats, starters, and salads as well as a carefully chosen drinks menu and amazing desserts.
Poole’s Diner
Perhaps the city’s most well-known restaurant, Poole's Diner has retro-chic charm to go along with one of America's most famous mac and cheese dishes - more than 15,000 are sold each year.
Side Street Restaurant
This old-fashioned eatery has been around since 1979. The menu features cosy comfort food such as with names such as ‘A Bit on the Warm Side,’ ‘The Green Side’, ‘The Lighter Side,’ ‘Our Best Side,’ and ‘Side Kicks’.
Museums
Raleigh boasts an abundance of high-quality, free museums, historic attractions, and educational institutions. Here are our top three:
The North Carolina Museum of History – open 09:00-17:00 on Tuesdays. Free entry
A showcase of more than 150,000 artifacts spanning 14,000 years of North Carolina’s history. The museum’s permanent exhibit, The Story of North Carolina, holds amazing artifacts, multimedia presentations, dioramas, and interactive features, along with two, full-size historic houses and many recreated environments.
Gregg Museum of Art & Design – open from 10:00 – 17:00 on Tuesdays. Free entry
This museum holds more than 50,000 objects, including major collections of textiles, clothing, ceramics, photography, Native American art, folk art, and design and decorative arts. From 19th century Japanese colour woodblock prints to antique North Carolina quilts, the objects on show span cultures, disciplines, and designs. There are approximately six exhibitions each year, including for February 2024, Leading by Design: Celebrating 75 years of the College of Design.
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences – open 10:00-17:00 on Tuesdays. Free entry
The Southeast’s largest natural history museum comprises a Nature Exploration Centre and Nature Research Center. See exhibits from coastal to prehistoric North Carolina, experience life as a bug in the Arthropod Zoo, explore natural science in labs and weather centers and visit the 10,000-gallon aquarium.
