What people say

The Singapore Garden Festival is so much more than a garden show. I’ve taken two world flower experts there over the years and they were both absolutely blown away by it.

A Deeper Dive

The names of the 18 shortlisted floral designers who will compete in the Singapore Garden Festival's fabulous Floral Windows to the World Championship have been revealed!  Hailing from 18 countries across five continents, it is an extraordinary line-up of international talent. Here are four names to whet your appetites.

Timo Bolte (UK)  trained under Gregor Lersch and went on to work as a senior designer for Hibiya Kadan in Tokyo and the artistic director of the Ritz Carlton hotel in Vienna before co-founding his own event design company in London. Bolte's bold yet simple designs with their unique twists on shape and colour are celebrated for their ability to change the ambience of a space. He is also a respected judge and speaker in the floral industry.

Stefan Van Berlo (Belgium) is a skilled and passionate florist. Since winning the Belgium Championship in 2010, his show-stopping, theatrical creations have earned him recognition on both the national and international stage. He has led classes, demonstrations, and large-scale projects across Europe and has also been appeared in the press and on television.

Athi Lyra (Estonia) is a master florist known for his sharp, modern designs inspired by the cold Nordic landscape. A well-recognised figure in his home country's floral design industry, he is a founding member of the Estonian Florist Association and organiser of the Estonian florist championships.

Hiroto Inoue (Japan) creates intricate geometric designs and compositions that often seem to defy gravity. He constructs solid backdrops for his flowers from blades of grasses, orchid roots, slivers of bamboo, strips of wood veneer, Washi (Japanese traditional hand-made paper) and Koyori (paper string). These fascinating, carefully constructed backgrounds are adorned with few or just one single flower, resulting in innovative designs that perfectly balance manmade and natural materials, structure and spontaneity.

Over the course of three days, the designers will be asked to execute a series of six tasks in front of judges and visitors with the aim of being crowned Grand Champion.

The names of the 12 garden designers who will compete in the Singapore Garden Festival's sensational Best of Show Designers' Gardens have been revealed and it is an extraordinary line-up of international horticultural talent!

There are two categories - Landscape Gardens that aim to showcase excellent horticultural design principles and skills, planting concepts and outstanding plants and Fantasy Gardens that combine creative plant and flower use, stage lighting and props to give an out-of-world effect.

Tandian (senior associate) has worked on prestigious award-winning projects in Singapore, including clinching the Landscape Industry Association (Singapore)’s ‘Best of Category for Implementation 2017’. She has also been instrumental in achieving BCA Green Mark Platinum Awards for her projects.

Kazuyuki Ishihara (Japan) entered Ikenobo, the mainstream school of flower arranging, at the age of 22 and has been fascinated by flowers and greenery ever since. His unique worldview using moss in his garden was highly praised at the Chelsea Flower Show. To date, he has won a total of 11 gold medals at the Chelsea Flower Show and was once praised as the "green magician" by Queen Elizabeth II.
