Nantes: Pour L'Amour du Fil
An unmissable April tour for needlecraft fans. We are no longer taking bookings for 2018, please email or phone us to register your interest in travelling to this amazing event in 2019.
This trip combines three days at Quiltmania’s renowned showcase of quilting, patchwork, embroidery and knitting with a guided tour of Nantes and the town's fabric shops. Enjoy an exclusive talk with Willyne Hammerstein as she shows you around her exhibition at the Pour L'Amour du Fil show.
The price includes four nights’ bed and breakfast accommodation and direct flights from Birmingham, Southampton and Edinburgh.
‘Pour l’Amour du Fil’ is a must-visit annual treat for needlework aficionados. Meaning ‘for the love of thread,’ the show brings together over 120 exhibitors from around the world in a five-day celebration of all things thread that ranges from inspiring exhibitions to tempting textile stalls via live, wide-screen demonstrations from leading artists.
Our tour gives you two full days to explore the show, which for 2018 will be based around the theme ‘On Dirait le Sud’ – spirit of the south. The themes are always enticing; 2017’s edition, for example, asked participating exhibitors to respond to ‘Boho Indie’, an invitation that elicited such aesthetic delights as an exhibition of 30 historic Welsh quilts and archival documents drawn from Jen Jones’ remarkable collection and an immersive display of colour from Kaffe Fassett.
The event also attracts an impressive roster of invited artists who come together to show their work and share their knowledge and passion. The line-up for 2018 is still to be announced, but previous names include David Butler, the artist behind modern folk brand Parson Gray; kimono expert Misao Wada and the author of Quilts from the Colonies, Margaret Mew.
We've arranged a very special talk by quilt expert Willyne Hammerstein, editor of well known books "Millefiori Quilts" 1, 2 and 3, just for our group at Pour L'Amour du Fil. At her exhibition, Willyne will talk you through her quilts, the processes behind them, and why and how she chooses the patterns and colours.
At 74 years young, Willyne is a retired professor in civil law, court judge and member of the Council of State in Holland. Quilt making has been a hobby of hers since 1985, and since 2010 she has been making quilts for Quiltmania. Willyne gives workshops and has held exhibitions in Holland, France, Spain, the USA, Japan and soon in Australia.
Located at the mouth of the Loire River, Nantes is a lively and innovative city with a rich cultural heritage; guests on this tour have ample time to explore. The Château des ducs de Bretagne is not to be missed: with 500 meters of curtain walls punctuated by seven towers, it appears as a fortress, but the inner courtyard opens to reveal a flamboyantly Gothic 15th century ducal residence, alongside other buildings dating from the 16th and the 18th Centuries.
The city’s other great architectural gem is the Cathedral St. Pierre. Built in the 15th Century and still an active place of worship, it boasts an impressive collection of exquisite contemporary stained glass windows.
We are excited to be able to announce that the Musée d’Arts de Nantes, home to one of the finest art collections in France, has just re-opened after a six-year refurbishment. The permanent exhibition contains over 900 works ranging from the 13th to 21st Century, so whether your taste is for Tintoretto, Rodin, Monet, Delaunay or Anish Kapoor, there is sure to be something here to please the eye.
Nantes lies on one of the most beautiful estuaries in the world and the best way to explore this landscape of rich wildlife preserves, huge industrial buildings and maritime heritage sites is by boat. ‘Estuaire’ is a two and three quarter hour trip along the Loire that not only affords wonderful views of this unique landscape, but also of the 30 works of contemporary art the city commissioned to enliven the river bank.
